Trail of Tears

  • In 1838 Martin Van Buren , who was Jackson's successor, sent in the army to remove the Cherokee from the land.
  • About 2,000 Cherokee died in camps while waiting for the westward march to happen.
  • On the journey, as the Cherokee called it as the " Trail of Tears", about 2,000 others died of starvation, disease , and exposure.
